5: Stavros - Kalivia - Kolieri - Platritheias - Agia Saranda - Lachos - Frikes
Seven Villages Tour. Observe village life and stop for a chat with the locals.
Stavros, the largest and central village in the north is the starting point of this fascinating tour of tiny rural villages. Along pathways, dirt tracks, through olive groves and forest, we end up in the seaside village of Frikes for a taste of local specialties.
From Stavros we follow an old cobbled path to Kalivia, just a few km up the hill. Walking through terraced olive groves we pass the ancient ruins of Homer's School .Then through to Kolieri with its many earthquake ruins. We stop at the spring of Kalamos for fresh water, then on to Platritheias with its prominent churchtower.
From here it's just a short distance to Agia Saranda where we can visit the local chapel with its original new frescoes and have some coffee at the little grocery shop. Lachos is the last village before Frikes. In Frikes we can enjoy some home-made treats at Rementzo restaurant. You can linger there or walk back to Stavros via the road (2 km, 45 minutes).
